Review: Peter and the Shadow Thieves

Peter and the Shadow Thieves
Peter and the Shadow Thieves by Dave Barry
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The story begun in Peter and the Starcatchers continues here, with Peter on a desperate quest to find Molly and warn her father of the deadly Lord Ombra, a shadow thief with the power to control minds. Back on Mollusk Island (now called “Never Land” by Peter and the other Lost Boys), Lord Ombra has joined forces with a new pirate crew and terrorized the natives.

However, by the time Peter locates Molly’s home, the shadow thief has already made a serious move, capturing the shadow and soul of Molly’s mother. Meanwhile, Molly’s father Lord Aster is on his way to parts unknown in order to conduct the mystical ritual of Return that will send the trunk of starstuff obtained in the first book back into space from which it came.

Overall, this book was enjoyable enough, with chapters manageable enough in length to read to my children. Even so, it lacked some of the originality and excitement of the original. I’ll probably get the third book in the series to read aloud as well, although neither of my kids seemed wild about that idea.
